The same judging and hosting team are back
It was all change for GBBO when the show moved to Channel 4 from the BBC last year. We waved goodbye to Mary Berry and welcomed Prue Leith to the judging panel. Prue returns this year, with silver fox Paul Hollywood – the only one of the original BBC line-up – back by her side. Comedy hosts Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding also return to the tent.
Innuendo has been banned
Say goodbye to soggy bottoms and hot baps, because the overt – and often predictable – use of double entendres that Bake Off fans have grown accustomed to, is being reined back this season in favour of more family-friendly content.
Vegan week is now a thing
In response to the rising popularity of veganism, GBBO will feature an episode without eggs, meat or dairy in the new season. Don’t think that the judges will be giving any concessions to the plants-based cakes though: “You can’t judge it and say it’s okay for vegan, it’s got to taste good, period,” revealed Paul Hollywood.
12 excited contestants
Every season sees 12 excited amateur bakers put to the test in the GBBO tent, and this year is no different.
Less daunting technical challenges
Judge Paul Hollywood revealed that some of the technical challenges will be a little less tricky than in previous years. “On the technical challenge, we offer a method and recipe. Sometimes we take the method lines away. But this time we have given them a little more information on the difficult ones. It’s finding that right level of complication,” he said.
Our long, hot summer has a part to play
Cool, dry environments are often called for when baking – so you’d expect the recent heatwave to cause quite a stir in the Bake Off tent. Judge Paul Hollywood has hinted that the British weather does play a part this year: “There were a couple of challenges – and I can’t say too much about this – where it did come into effect,” he said.
