Classic Silhouettes, Cut-Outs & Conscious Collections – The Hottest Swimwear Trends for 2021

The fashion search site Stylight analysed the search behaviour of their 120M international users and discovered the latest swimwear trends, which go back-to-basics with classic silhouettes, retro prints and cut-out styles, as seen on Kim Kardashian.

Fashion search site Stylight has discovered the swimwear styles, prints, and colours taking the spotlight and the sustainable brands making waves in 2021.

Sustainability continues to be a priority for many brands – swimwear included! The top 3 brands making waves within the industry are Casa Raki (+215% increase in clicks**), Jade Swim (+68%) and Fisch (+39%), who use sustainable or recycled materials in their timeless swimwear collections.

The 'little black bikini' and classically cut swimsuits that are no-fuss, no-frill are proving popular with a 316% increase in clicks compared to last year, as seen on celebs Amelia Gray Hamlin and Nicole Richie. Another modernised classic is built-in sculptured swimwear, reminiscent of Brigitte Bardot or Marilyn Monroe; this vintage style beautifully supports and flatters every figure and has seen an increase of +68%.

Surprisingly, the must-have colour for bikinis is brown – unique compared to the pastel and neon shades we've seen in recent years. Bikinis in shades of this more subtle, natural colour saw an increase of 113% in clicks on Stylight than 2020.

This year's biggest swimwear trends include colour/print blocking: one swimsuit, with several colours or prints "blocked" together – just like in the collection by the celebrity brand Reina Olga. Stylight has seen an increase in clicks of well over 1000% for this category.

Another big must-have are swimsuits with retro prints and patterns – think 70s style paisley or 90s Versace silk shirts. Like colour block swimsuits, this style saw an increase in clicks of over 1000%, compared to the previous year. Gingham is another trend - this print has already appeared in many spring collections, and it's now making its way into swimwear, with clicks increasing by 132%.

It's not just about simplicity this summer; Stylight has also seen an increase in both asymmetric styles (+230%) and cut-out swimwear (+182%), as seen on celebs like Kim Kardashian (below) and Chrissy Teigen. From one-shoulder looks to keyhole bikinis, it’s a trend to have fun with.

Such bold patterns and styles are sure to make an impression at the pool, beach, garden, or lake if you fancy a spot of wild swimming this summer!

**Clicks analysed from 1 January to 11 April 2021 and compared with data from the same period in 2020.
