What do you do if someone talks to you about their mental health?

Listen

First and foremost, listen. Let them complete their sentences, that they may have found hard to bring up in the first place, without interrupting. This is because, it may harm their ability to talk about it in the future, if they think people are not listening. Then respond when they are finished.

If you understand, then let them know

If you have gone through anything similar, let them know that they are not alone. Try not to switch the topic even if you find it a struggle – it would be healthy for you both to share.

Make sure they know you available for them

Mental health is usually not solved in one conversation, so make sure they know that you are there for them in any time of need. That way, if it came down to it, they know they have you to turn to and are not alone. Which again, is crucial.

Do not judge

Do not name call or make it apparent that you do not understand and do not intend to try, the way you respond is more important than you could ever imagine.

Do not gossip about what you have been told

It is hard enough to open up and if they have picked you to talk to, then they trust you, do not break that trust. They have chosen to tell you and not anyone else, so it should stay that way.
