Why does Meghan Markle always wear neutral colours around the Queen?

We’ve got major wardrobe envy for Britain’s newest princess.

Even before the big day, Meghan’s outfits were on point – from the black, beaded Ralph & Russo couture worn for her engagement shoot, to the green, floral Self-Portrait dress worn to the Invictus Games reception in London. But since marrying Prince Harry back in May, the fashion icon has cast aside bolder colours in favour of pastel and neutral-toned tailoring.

Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have chosen to release this official portrait photograph to mark their engagement. The photograph was taken by photographer @alexilubomirski earlier this week at Frogmore House, Windsor.

Turning up at an event only to realise you clash with your friend’s outfit is a nightmare at the best of times – but when you’re on the world stage like the Duchess of Sussex, that fear goes up a notch! It is thought that this recent change in style could be an effort to compliment her new grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen is well known for sporting some seriously jazzy colours for her public appearances – bright lime green and vivid sky blue appear to be particular favourites. Yet according to her daughter-in-law Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, these brightly coloured wardrobe choices are more than just a fashion statement. “She needs to stand out for people to be able to say ‘I saw the Queen’,” she said in the documentary The Queen at 90. When the Queen turns up somewhere the crowds can be huge – often 10-15 people deep.  “Someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the queen’s hat as she went past,” explains Sophie.

So yes, it could be a coincidence that Meghan’s recent outfits have been light-coloured. Although we’re inclined to think that ensembles such as the blush Carolina Herrera dress worn to Trooping the Colour and the cream midi Givenchy dress worn for her recent trip to Chester were conscious fashion choices made so as not to draw focus from the Queen.

We’re not sure if we’d change our style for the in-laws – but Meghan, who looks amazing in neutrals or rainbow hues – has secured her fashion icon status regardless.
